Jon Lowenstein, USA

Winner of the Editorial Section of the Hasselblad Masters Awards, Jon Lowenstein has been a professional photographer for more than fifteen years. His speciality is long-term, in-depth documentary photographic projects that question the status quo, and he strives for unsparing clarity and believes images make a critical contribution by revealing the subjects of history that lack voice.

For more than a decade Lowenstein has travelled, studied, and documented the experiences of Latin Americans living throughout the United States. He also recently became a John Simon Memorial Guggenheim Fellow for his extensive work examining the South Side of Chicago and in 2008 the Alicia Patterson Foundation named him the Joseph P. Albright Fellow. Among his many other successes have been World Press Awards in 2004 and 2007, a Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography in 2007 and a Fuji Community Awareness Award.

His international assignments include covering elections in Afghanistan to the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to documenting social violence in Guatemala. Most recently, he completed a project about the impact of Cerebral Malaria in children in Uganda.
